Teacher convicted of raping 12-year old

A 44-year old teacher was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in jail for raping a 12-year old girl.
The teacher, from Gothenburg, was arrested at a hotel in Eksjö, south-central Sweden. The man and the girl had met through an Internet chatroom.
The teacher admitted to Eksjö district court that he slept with the girl, but denied statutory rape on the grounds that he did not realise she was under 15, the legal age of consent in Sweden. The court rejected his argument, imposing the two year sentence.
The conviction came on the same day as another teacher, this time from Ångermanland, near Sundsvall, was sentenced to 5 months in jail for repeatedly sexually abusing a young pupil. Ångermanland district court said that the teacher had seriously abused his position of trust.
