Sweden turns the corner on chlamydia
It seems Sweden has turned the corner on the nasty little bacteria that leaves people howling at the moon every time they pee.
Although some 80 new cases of the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia are popping up in Sweden each day, experts say numbers are turning around.
Chlamydia, which makes some victims feel as though they are peeing out a red-hot poker, or can cause discharges and fever, is the most common STD in Sweden and affects those under 30 the most.
Cases of disease have shot up since the end of the 1990s, but the number of those infected as started to go down during the first half of 2006. The total amount infected during that time is still quite high — some 15,000.
Several things could be causing the downturn. Government agencies have been investing more on awareness campaigns, condom use seems to be going up, and some even think that the bacteria that causes the disease is becoming less infectious.
Chlamydia is curable with a dose of antibiotics.
