Stockholm derby abandoned after crowd trouble
Monday night's Stockholm football derby between Djurgården and Hammarby was abandoned after both sets of fans disgraced themselves at Söder stadium.
Djurgården's fans threw objects which hit both a linesman and a match official. Hammarby's fans responded by shooting fireworks around the arena and then storming the pitch.
Nine minutes into the second half the game was halted. Then after a 30 minute delay the decision was relayed to the supporters: the match was to be abandoned for safety reasons.
The trouble began half way through the first half. When Hammarby's Jeffery Aubynn went to take a corner, Djurgården fans began to hurl objects at him. Linesman Kenneth Petersson from Norrköping was hit on the head and needed treatment, while a match official received medical care after being hit on the head and collapsing to the ground.
Referee Martin Ingvarsson considered stopping the Allsvenskan game then. But he decided to let it continue after the public was warned that any more objects being thrown would result in the game being abandoned. By then, Djurgården were already leading 2-0.
Djurgården extended their lead to 3-0 before the break, and in the second half the fury of Hammarby's fans spilled over.
First they surged threateningly to the front of the stands. Then when fireworks began to rain down, the fans stormed the pitch.
The referee and his assistants ran to the dressing room followed by the majority of the players. Some of the home players remained on the pitch to try to reason with the fans.
A number of those who stormed the pitch were arrested immediately and police in riot gear held back the rest of the supporters while Martin Ingvarsson made his decision to abandon the game.
Hammarby's assistant trainer Thom Ålun agreed with the referee.
"We are furious at the small group who have done this. They cannot be called supporters, because they just destroy things for us," said Åhlund to Canal Plus.
After the decision was made, Djurgården's supporters were kept in Söder stadium.
"We let the Hammarby lot get away. Then we followed the Djurgården fans another way to the underground station," said police spokesman Björn Engström to TT.
