New poll: tiny lead for Alliance

Sweden's centre-right Alliance has a small lead over the governing Social Democratic Party and its partners, according to a new poll by Skop.

The poll gives the Alliance a lead of 2.1 percent over the red-green bloc, which is within the margin of error. The poll shows a smaller lead than two surveys published on Thursday, which gave the Alliance a lead of between 4 and 5 percent.

Support for the Green Party was up 1.8 percent since a similar poll last month, leaving the party with 6.6 percent support. This is the only statistically significant change shown in the poll.

If the poll accurately reflected opinion in the country, it would only require 1.1 percent of voters to change bloc for the Social Democrats and their partners in the Left and Green parties to regain the lead.

"In practice this is a dead heat between the blocs ahead of an exciting election," Skop wrote in a press release.

Of the 1,000 Swedish citizens between 18 and 84 who replied to the survey, 49.1 percent said they supported the Alliance, and 47.0 percent said they supported the red-green parties.

The survey was carried out between 12th July and 8th August. People were asked "Which political party do you like best in national politics?".
