After 25 years, a Swedish woman has been given permission to adopt her stepdaughter. The younger woman is now aged 40.

Trelleborg district court originally blocked the adoption, arguing that there was no reason for the process since the 'child' was an adult.

But the 40 year old woman and her stepmother took the case to the Skåne and Blekinge appeal court, which found that since both parties wanted the adoption to take place it should be allowed.

The younger woman lived with her father and stepmother between the ages of 15 and 18, after moving away from her biological mother after a disagreement.

The woman is not the first fortysomething to be on the receiving end of an adoption in Sweden. Indeed, the Swedish royal dynasty was founded on a mature adoption.

In 1810 a French soldier named Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was adopted by Sweden's King Karl XIII. Eight years later the king died, leaving behind no natural heirs, and Bernadotte succeeded to the throne as Karl XIV Johan - the great-great-great-great grandfather of today's king.

Such an illustrious future is not anticipated for the 40 year old Trelleborg adoptee, however.
