Both the injured men work in the bank, and are aged 45 and 50 respectively. At 2pm on Monday the condition of both men was said to have improved, and was being described as serious but stable by the Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

The alarm was raised at 10am on Monday. A few minutes later police were alerted to a man who had been found in a nearby square with knife injuries. A man in his forties has been detained by police.

"This is currently being treated as two counts of attempted murder," said Stefan Gustafsson, press spokesman for Västra Götaland police.

Both men were stabbed either in the bank or directly outside. One of the men managed to walk around 1 kilometre to a hot dog stand.

Police say the motive for the crime is not yet clear, and are not certain that the attack was part of a failed robbery. No money was taken from the bank.

One of the men was walked to a gas station by his colleagues, where he was transferred to a car. At a square around one kilometre from the scene the car was met by an ambulance, which took the injured man to hospital, witnesses say.

One person, taken to be the attacker, was seen by witnesses calmly walking away from the scene of the crime.

Police are currently carrying out a forensic examination of the site.
