Swimmers crackle as lake goes electric

Swimmers at Södra Ånnabosjön, near Örebro in central Sweden, began complaining about a strange prickly feeling in the water. Representatives from the municipality spent Thursday at the beach trying to figure out the cause of the complaints.

It is now believed the water is actually electrified. Benny Fägerstad, who investigated the problem for the municipality, said after looking at power cables in the area, two of them appear to not be grounded.

“What we know is that the electric current that bathers feel must be grounded away from the area,” Fägerstad said.

He added that swimming in the area was not dangerous.

“If it were dangerous, you would really feel it,” he said.
