Confidence up in government and Alliance

Confidence in both the Swedish government and the opposition has increased, according to a new survey by Skop.

"The government's figures are showing a distinct upward trend," said Skop analyst Birgitta Hultåker.

The same, however, was true of the opposition Alliance. Some 40 percent of those surveyed said they thought the four-party Alliance would do a better job if it was in power. The figure was up seven percentage points since May.

"There is uncertainty among Swedes about the Alliance alternative. This is manifested in the rapid changes in confidence," Hultåker said.

The government's standing in Skop's survey has increased steadily since the end of last year, but it has still not come anywhere near the levels it attained in the summer before the 2002 election.

The new survey showed an increase of four percentage points since May, with the government gaining following a period when the political week in Almedalen and the Lebanon crisis have dominated the news.

Still only 3 percent of those questioned think the government is doing a 'very good' job.

Skop approached 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 84 on the 15th and 16th June, receiving responses from 981. They were asked: "Do you think that the government is doing a good job or a bad job?" and "Do you think that an Alliance government would do a better job or a worse job?".
