Woman died after hospital move

A woman on a respirator at Malmö University Hospital died after being moved to Kristianstad Hospital in an ordinary ambulance rather than a specially equipped vehicle.

The woman was moved from the Malmö hospital due to a shortage of beds. There were not enough properly trained staff for her to be transported using the special portable ventilator and an intensive care ambulance. She was therefore moved in a normal ambulance.

Her condition deteriorated during the trip to Kristianstad and she died a few days later.

The Swedish Board of Social Welfare said it was not possible to prove that the woman died thanks to being moved. But the board criticized the way the health service transported her, according to Sydsvenskan.

It also demanded an account from Malmö University hospital of how many intensive care patients had been moved due to a lack of space.
