New powers to seize criminals' income

New laws will make it easier for the Swedish state to seize income made through criminal activity, according to a proposal by justice minister Thomas Bodström.

The proposal was presented at a press conference in Gothenburg on Monday. Under the new scheme, prosecutors will be able to confiscate suspected illegal income at an early stage of investigations. People would have the money returned if they were eventually cleared of crimes.

The new proposal covers serious offences that carry jail terms of more than six years. These include narcotics offences, serious tax crimes and people smuggling.
