Sixty year low in Swedish road deaths

Despite a several nasty accidents in 2006, including the January 27 bus wreck that killed nine people, the total number of traffic deaths during the first two quarters this year was the lowest in 60 years, the National Road Administration reported on Thursday.
Thomas Lekander, spokesman for the Administration told news agency TT that we would have to look back to 1946 to see as many deaths during the first half of the year. Back then there were only 250,000 cars on the road. There are now 4.7 million cars in Sweden.
Lekander said there was also a record low number of bicycle deaths during the period, while more have died on motorcycles than than in the first half of last year.
He said 234 people die on average in road deaths each year, adding that numbers look lower so far this year.
