'Let older workers semi-retire'

People in their early sixties should be able to go into semi-retirement if their employer gives a full-time job to a person under 25, several blue-collar unions have proposed.

The proposal, if taken up by 15 percent of workers over 60, would lead to jobs for 55,000 people between 18 and 24, the unions argued in an article in Dagens Nyheter.

The four unions who put forward the idea are store-workers' organization Handels, building union Byggnads, service sector union Seko and transport worker organization Transport.

The unions said that state-funded semi-retirement should be introduced temporarily between 2007 and 2010 because of the way Sweden's demographics will pan out during that period. The unions argue that there will be a large number of people approaching retirement as well as a large number of young adults in the next few years.

The initiative would benefit both young people, fewer of whom would be unemployed, and the people in their sixties, who would be able to continue working for a few years "despite being worn out", the unions argued.
