The housing authority in the Ängelholm district in southern Sweden has granted permission to build Skåne's first crematorium for horses.

Since horses are more commonly being considered a family member, more and more owners want to give their favorite stallion or mare an appropriate send-off.

Currently, the only facility that can take such large animals is situated at the country's veterinary medicine institution in Uppsala.

There was an attempt to build such a facility before in Skåne, but it was cancelled after neighbors complained. Despite some nagging from local residents this time, permission was still granted. Three to five people will operate the crematorium.

The horse would be placed in a giant oven and would take four to six hours to burn. Two or three horses could be cremated each day.
