Drunk bus driver suspended

A bus driver who was stopped by police in Värmland on Wednesday evening had a blood alcohol level of 1.88 promille - nine times over the Swedish limit of 0.2 promille.

Passengers and other drivers had called the police as the bus wove erratically through the traffic, reported SVT's local news programme, Värmlandsnytt.

Police stopped the bus south of Kristinehamn and the a breath test revealed 0.94 milligrams of alcohol in the driver's blood, or 1.88 promille. He was taken in for questioning.

"There were about 20 passengers on the bus and they and others called us," said Sören Lövengärd at Karlstad police to TT.

"The bus was on its way to Mariestad."

According to Lövengärd the driver was released after questioning and further tests. He is suspected of serious drunk driving and driving without due care and attention. His driving licence was confiscated on the spot.

Per Jansson, the managing director of the route operator Swebus Express, told Värmlandsnytt that there was no excuse for the incident and that the driver had been suspended immediately.
