Haga Man victim: I can't forgive him

The trial of Niklas Lindgren, the so called Haga Man, is finished, but in an open letter to a Swedish newspaper, his last victim said she can’t forgive him for what he did.

The 52-year-old woman who was raped and nearly drowned in Umeå last winter talked about her day in court last month and how it felt to sit in front of the man she said beat and tried to drown her.

“As far as I know, Niklas seemed totally unmoved during my day of testimony, he did not even make an expression,” the woman’s letter said, according to the Västerbottens-Kuriren. “I sat opposite him and looked him in the eyes. I didn’t see any tears.”

The attack on the 52-year-old woman was so severe that the prosecutor charged Lindgren with rape and attempted murder. He has denied trying to kill the woman, saying he was “out after something sexual.”

At the trial he asked for forgiveness. Something the woman doesn’t believe was genuine.

“I feel the apology was not seriously made by him because I couldn’t make out any form of empathy or remorse regarding what he did to me,” she said. “I felt his “sorry” were words without meaning – maybe more aimed at the media and his family.

Lindgren is charged with five counts of rape, two of which were severe enough to be considered attempted murder. The attacks took place over a period of seven years, starting in 1998 in Umeå.
