Panic broke in the store when shots were fired in a jewellery department. Several witnesses say they heard around ten shots, according to TT.

Stockholm police say the alarm was raised at 10:41 am on Thursday.

The raid was carried out by at least two robbers wearing crash helmets and armed with a pistol and an axe. Upon entering the jewellery department, one of them fired "several shots," police say.

The robbers did not make away with any goods, and were seen running out of the store. Two men were caught shortly afterwards by customers and NK security guards - one outside the store's main entrance on Hamngatan, the other round the corner on Regeringsgatan.

Two hours after the raid it was still unclear how many people had been involved in the raid. Some witnesses said they saw two men, others three.

"Many witnesses stayed behind at the scene and we have been interviewing them as quickly as possible," said police spokeswoman Towe Hägg early on Thursday afternoon.

Police are also examining recordings from NK's security cameras for images of the men.

The two people arrested were taken on Thursday to Norrmalm police station, where it was revealed that the pair were born in 1985 and 1986 respectively. Both are Swedish citizens.

The men are suspected of robbery.

The jewellery concession at the centre of the raid remained closed on Thursday afternoon, but other parts of the store were open as normal. No injuries have been reported in relation to the raid.

Former Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh was stabbed to death at NK in 2003.
