The XC90 is a gift from the Ford-owned manufacturer to Benedict. The German-born former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger looked curious as he tested the leather-covered back seats of the specially adapted vehicle.

Pascal Bellemans, President of Volvo Auto Italia, said the company was "happy and proud" to present the car to the Pope.

"Safety has always been one of Volvo's core values," he said.

"Our strong engagement in protecting and saving lives could not have received a more moving confirmation," Bellemans added.
