Gothenburg elk shot by police
A young elk was shot by police on Tuesday after hours of gallivanting through central Gothenburg.
The elk was found taking a morning stroll through town, walking down streets, over bridges, and taking a dip in the canal in the middle of town.
The elk, an animal a bit smaller than the North American moose, was first reported to police shortly before 7 a.m. The calf was seen near Burgård park and later popped up by Avenyn, Heden, Sten Sturegatan, and several other spots.
Several officers followed the animal, which became increasingly stressed during its mid-town travels. After 7:18 a.m. somebody was able to shut in the elk in a closed-off area, but the elk wasn’t ready to call it quits.
The elk was shot by a hunter shortly before lunch on Tuesday.
Shortly before 8 a.m., the animal took a run through the city center again, taking a swim in the near Drottningtorget, directly in front of those waiting for their commuter train.
It is not uncommon for calves, separated from their mothers, to wander into towns.
An elk calf was shot at the beginning of June in central Gothenburg. Calves are too stressed after running through town to be returned to the wild.
