The man, 33, admitted to the killing following his arrest, but during a remand hearing at Kalmar district court he neither admitted nor denied committing the crime.

"There is forensic evidence against him," said Ulf Karlsson, spokesman for Kalmar county police force.

The man is also suspected of attempted murder for an attack on the dead woman's husband in which he was stabbed in the chest.

The 33-year old has not given an explanation for the attack. He says that he chose the house randomly, went in and attacked the woman. When her husband heard the commotion and rushed in he was also attacked.

The suspect lives in Karlstad, in Värmland county on the other side of Sweden near the Norwegian border. He was on a short visit to Öland when the attack happened.

He had previously been sectioned several times in psychiatric institutions. A medical report presented to the court said he suffers from schizophrenia and hears voices. The doctor who wrote the report said that "he could frankly do anything."

Värmland county council has asked the National Board of Health and Welfare to investigate how the man was treated by the health services.
