Tele2's Dutch merger on hold

Dutch Versatel Telecom International said Friday that its planned merger with Swedish telecom operator Tele2 has been put on hold.
"Versatel and Tele2 are currently considering possible alternatives, amongst others Versatel acquiring Tele2's Dutch and Belgian activities. It is anticipated that to 1 September 2006, a further press release will be issued on the outcome of these discussions," Versatel said in a press release.
A company spokeswoman told ANP news agency that the companies "are taking a break" but insisted this did not mean the merger was called off entirely.
