Birds halt Umeå rail line

Plans to build a railway line through an area in northern Sweden with a large bird population have been halted by the Environmental Court of Appeal.

The controversial stretch of line is the last part of the new Botniabana railway, a 190 kilometre track linking towns and cities on the sparsely populated Norrland coast.

The part of the line that has been stopped crosses Umedeltat, south of Umeå, which is designated a nature protection area.

The Umeå Environmental Court had previously given permission for the line to be built, but the appeal court has told it to reconsider.
