Right to full time work after three years

Employers will be forced to give full time jobs to anyone who has worked part-time for them for three years, according to a proposed new law details of which were discovered by news agency TT on Tuesday.

The proposal makes no exceptions for small companies.

Labour minister Hans Karlsson is currently negotiating with the Left Party and Green Party over plans for a right to full time work.

The Left Party's parliamentary group approved the plan in a meeting on Tuesday afternoon. But both parties contain critics of the plans – many fear that many small companies will not be able to cope with the new rules, and the Greens want exceptions to be made for companies with few employees.

"We want to highlight in negotiations the question of exceptions for small companies," said the Green Party's Ulf Holm.

"But it is not realistic to believe that the proposal will be ready next week. We received the proposal a week ago, while the government has been working on it for two months," he added.

Both public and private sector employees have rejected the proposal, as have the centre-right opposition Alliance. The demand for a right to full-time work comes mainly from public sector unions, which have large numbers of members who are women working part time.
