"The piece is completely unique, it was a one-off order," a spokeswoman for the Bukowskis auction house, Kerbela Nobel, told AFP.

The identity of the buyer was not disclosed.

The clock, in red and grey granite, was ordered by Russian oil baron Emmanuel Nobel in 1906 as a gift to his family business to celebrate the extraction of 16 million tonnes of crude from an oil field in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The price was a record for handmade artwork sold in Sweden, Nobel added. The clock had a 10 million kronor starting price and attracted bidders from throughout the world, Nobel added.
