Swedish king's car 'runs into woman'
A car carrying Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia hit a teenager while driving the royal couple through Istanbul on Thursday.
The 18-year-old woman fell to the ground but did not appear to be injured, according to a photographer for news agency AFP, who witnessed the incident. The woman was taken to hospital for a check-up.
The woman was crossing a street as the royal convoy was passing on its way back from a visit to the Topkapi Palace, the former home of Ottoman sultans.
The king and queen did not get out of the car after the incident and security officials escorting them took care of the woman, AFP reported. It was reported by Swedish taboid Expressen that Deputy Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm was also in the car.
Royal spokeswoman Ann-Christin Jernberg told The Local that the woman had "suddenly walked right out and touched the car", which was also carrying deputy prime minister Bosse Ringholm in a cortege.
"But she was not injured and was able to continue on to her job," Jernberg stressed.
"It's really no big deal, and the King is also fine, according to my information," she said.
The royal couple are on the second day of a three-day long visit to Turkey, accompanied by migration minister Barbro Holmberg and by Ringholm.
On Wednesday, they visited historic sites in the western province of Izmir, including the ancient city of Ephesus, which houses the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world.
