Two researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute are guilty of research fraud, said a committee charged with investigating the case on Wednesday.

After a review of the research, the professor and doctoral student who were researching alternative pain treatments, investigators found flaws in the material when compared to standard practices.

The review was carried out by the Swedish Research Council at the request of KI and took several years to be completed. Already at the beginning of the year, the review panel established fraud was committed.

“We primarily still consider that there is reason for criticism,” said Björn Thomasson, spokesman for the review panel.

The panel said it was up to KI regarding how to deal with the two researchers.

Katarina Sternudd, a KI spokeswoman, said neither of the researchers currently works at the institute.
