The 29-year-old man is accused of murdering 18-year-old Julia Oltenau from Höganäs, in December 1998.

The detention is a result of criminal investigators working in the so called Cold Cases group in Skåne, said Henrik Malmquist, police spokesman. The detained man has not been part of the investigation previously, but he has a connection to the geographic area and time of the crime.

“We don’t want to – for natural reasons – talk about the case details from our work,” he said. “We have already held for questioning a few others and are counting on, during the next few days, needing to question others in the man’s circle of friends.”

Prosecutor Tord Josefsson, who is helping lead the investigation, said he is determining whether there is enough evidence to have the suspect remanded in custody. He said that decision would not be made before Wednesday or Thursday.

Oltenau was attacked on her way home from buying bread one night in early December. She was found in a garden a short time after and died from her injuries.
