"It's rubbish that we want to abolish marriage"
Gudrun Schyman, one of Sweden’s most colourful politicians and spokeswoman for Feminist Initiative, will be holding a pre-election talk for English speakers in Stockholm next week, it has been announced.
Schyman, whose controversial party has been at the heart of a debate about feminism and equality in Sweden, says she intends to put people right about the party and what it stands for:
“People read a lot in the newspapers that we want to abolish marriage, which is rubbish,” she told The Local.
She also said she wants to talk about “the situation of women both globally and nationally, and why ordinary politics cannot deal with these issues.”
“Of course, I will also talk about the election and the situation of Swedish politics more generally,” she added.
She will be speaking at a central Stockholm pub as part of the English Speaker Series, which until now has mainly invited prominent native English speakers on visits to Stockholm.
“There are a lot of people in Stockholm who have English as their native language, and there are also people from abroad interested in what we have to say,” said Schyman.
Schyman was elected to parliament for the Left Party in 1988, which she led from 1993 to 2003. She left the party in December 2004, and started the Feminist Initiative in April 2005.
Gudrun Schyman will be speaking in the conference room at the Man in the Moon pub, Tegnérgatan 2C, Stockholm.
