External funding threatens research independence

Research carried out at universities across Sweden is largely funded by organisations other than the universities themselves.

In a survey of Swedish professors by Swedish Radio, many said that the independence of research in Sweden is under threat.

Of 4,000 professors approached for the survey, 2,100 responded. 60% of those said that they get at least two thirds of their research funding from outside their universities. Every fourth professor gets no money at all from the university and says that all research is funded by external contributions.

Instead, the grants come from public authorities, the EU, charitable foundations, research councils and companies.
