Volvo Cars has announced that it is recalling 250,000 cars around the world.

The majority of those - some 217,000 cars - are the XC 90 model produced since 2003. The remaining 34,300 cars are the S40 and V50 models built in 2004, 2005 and 2006 with five cylinder turbo motors.

The problem on the XC 90 city jeep is the outer steering ball joint, which needs to be replaced.

Meanwhile, on the S40 and the V50 models, the company has discovered that a fuel line in the engine bay can be damaged by heat from the turbo.

Volvo spokesman Christer Gustafsson told The Local that 4,000 S40 and V50 cars are to be recalled within Sweden, along with 8,000 XC 90s.

The fault is not thought to have led to any accidents.

The recall could be seen as rather bad timing for Volvo, considering the company's recent stuttering sales, but Christer Gustafsson disagreed:

"I don't see it that way. When we have something safety related we take our responsibility seriously and recall cars for checking," he told TT.

This is not Volvo's largest-ever recall. Two years ago, 460,000 cars of various models were recalled due to a problem with the fan.
