Snow machines behind Swedish fish carnage

The spring thaw has unlocked a grisly secret in Kyrktjärn, a lake in the northern Swedish county of Jokkmokk.
As the thick ice began to melt after the winter freeze, huge quantities of dead fish - mostly pike - rose to the surface.
Now locals suspect that the cause was the snow machines used on nearby ski slopes, which have pumped water from the lake leading to a lack of oxygen.
"During the winter's jig fishing competition not a single fish was caught," two elderly women told the local paper Norrbottens Kuriren as they looked out over the shimmering piscine corpses.
"When you see this you can understand why."
New water should have been pumped back into the lake. However, that did not happen due to fears that it would lead to dangerously thin ice.
