Almost 3,000 Djurgården fans had made the trip to Gothenburg by bus and train for the match, and specially trained police were on duty in an attempt to maintain order in the city.

The Djurgården supporters had gathered in restaurants on Avenyn, Gothenburg's main street. Barely an hour before the start of the match they began throwing chairs, bottles and glasses.

"They are suspected of rioting and were taken to the police station for questioning," said Anna Rosenberg, Gothenburg police's information officer.

To get through all the interviews, police were forced to call in officers from the whole of the Västra Götaland region.

"The prosecutor was also called in to make decisions about what to do with all those arrested," said Rosenberg.

Nobody was injured in the disturbance.

After the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, 30 Gais supporters were arrested for causing a disturbance.

The train which was to bring the Djurgården fans back to Stockholm was delayed by 30 minutes at Gothenburg's Central Station as so many supporters were trying to get onto it.

When it finally left for Stockholm, it was without 25 Djurgården fans who remained in police custody overnight.
