Helene Åström and Jenny Söderqvist disappeared during a private trip in a hired jeep to the Kalahari desert where they were to visit the Kutse game reserve.

"We are doing what we can from Sweden to ensure that everything possible is being done in Botswana," said SVT head of information Helga Baagöe.

"The country is in the same time zone as Sweden and now that it's light the army will begin searching for our colleagues."

The trip to the national park, which is as big as the whole of Blekinge county, was to last for two days. The women should have been back in their hotel on Monday.

Since then, staff at the park have been out searching for the women and their car, so far without success.

Åström and Söderqvist are on a sabbatical from SVT's editorial department during which they are working on an aid project funded by the Swedish International Development Agency.

Together with employees of Swedish Radio, they are helping to start a public radio and TV service in Botswana.
