It is still not clear precisely what caused the woman's death during the birth but TV4 reported that a misplaced incision appeared to sever her intestine, resulting in uncontrollable internal bleeding.

"It's dreadfully tragic and all our staff who were involved are extremely upset today," said Gunilla Odensjö, a senior consultant at Söder hospital, to TV4.

The incident has been reported to the Board of Health and Welfare under the 'Lex Maria' law requiring medical employees to report errors or negligence.

The hospital will carry out its own investigation into the woman's death, but confirmed that the department was fully staffed at the time of the operation.

According to the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare, there were 16,524 Caesarean section procedures in Sweden in 2004, accounting for almost 17% of all births. Ten years before, only 11% of babies were delivered by Caesarean.

On average, one woman a year dies as a result of complications during the operation.
