New law to protect Swedish women

Sweden's Minister for Social Services, Morgan Johansson, is to propose legislation forcing local authorities to give better support to women in vulnerable situations. All women should have access to crisis support in their own area.

"Irrespective of where you live in the country, you should have the right to help and support if you are beaten, and the right to protected accommodation," said Johansson.

"I want a women protection law and it will be the responsibility of the local authorities," the minister told Swedish Radio's Ekot programme.

Support for women who are the victims of violence varies considerably in different parts of the country, as was shown by a study begun by the Ministry of Social Affairs last autumn.

The inquiry will be completed in the summer and the legislative proposal will follow in the autumn.
