Immigrants 'well integrated in Sweden' claim
Sweden is good at integrating immigrants, the head of the government agency responsible for integration has claimed.
In a report presented by the Swedish Integration Board (Integrationsverket) on Wednesday, the organisation's director general says that Sweden is one of the best countries in the world at integrating immigrants. The report says that 64 percent of foreigners in Sweden are in work. Eighty percent of second generation immigrants have a job.
Andreas Carlgren, writing in Dagens Nyheter, paints an optimistic picture of the situation for immigrants in Sweden. He says that Brussels-based Migration Policy Group puts Sweden second out of the 15 countries in western Europe that made up the EU until 2004.
A survey by the OECD says that Sweden is in a similar position to other industrialized countries when it comes to the number of immigrants in work, with between 60 and 70 percent employed. Only Portugal and Switzerland have a higher percentage of immigrants in work – between 70 and 80 percent.
