The 33-year old man’s lawyer Leif Silbersky would only give basic details about what happened at the hearing in Umeå, which was held behind closed doors and which lasted all day Wednesday.

The man is suspected of a series of attacks and rapes of women in the town.

Of his client, Silbersky maintained, “his position is the same as it has always been: he denies the allegations.”

Silbersky added that prosecutors had loosened some restrictions on the suspect. He had previously been isolated and been forbidden from receiving visitors, reading newspapers, watching TV, listening to the radio or using the phone.

Prosecutor Annika Öster has until Thursday to apply for the man’s detention to be extended. It is likely that the man will spend a long period on remand while police investigate the case, something Silbersky says he accepts.

The man was arrested on 31st March on suspicion of three counts of rape and one count of attempted murder. Police also suspect the man of a further five attacks.
