Top Moderate quits post after tax 'error'
The vice chairman of the Moderate Party has had her tax declaration rejected by the Swedish National Tax Board (Skatteverket), TV4 reported on Wednesday.
The tax board decided to disallow a deduction of 49,000 kronor in Gunilla Carlsson's declaration for the 2004 tax year.
"I made a mistake," said Gunilla Carlsson to TV4.
Carlsson has resigned from two international roles, including her post as vice chairman in the EPP - the Moderates' party group within the EU - but remains in her senior position in the party.
"I am concentrating now on my role as vice chairman for the Moderates," said Carlsson.
Some 19,000 kronor of the deduction was for 'incorrect claims for private living costs'. These claims mean that Gunilla Carlsson must also pay an additional charge amounting to 40% of the tax due on the 19,000 kronor.
According to the tax board the deductions were made for items such as clothes, flowers, groceries, a cable TV charge and costs for overnight hotel stays on private business.
The tax board said it did not consider these items to have been necessary for Gunilla Carlsson to have carried out her job.
