Sweden to investigate Milosevic detention unit
Sweden will carry out a probe of a UN detention unit here where former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic died three weeks ago, the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia said on Friday.
"The Swedish government accepted the tribunal's request to conduct an independent audit of its detention unit," the UN court said.
Milosevic, 64, was found dead in his cell on March 11th. He had long suffered from high blood pressure and related heart problems.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) announced that it would start a probe into the management of the detention unit after media reported that banned substances including alcohol and unprescribed drugs had been found in Milosevic's cell in late 2005 and early 2006.
The registrar admitted that "contraband" had been found in the former president's cell but insisted that the appropriate measures were taken without explaining what was done.
Initial results from Milosevic's autopsy and a toxicological report showed that he had died of a heart attack and that the Dutch doctors have so far not had any indication that he was poisoned, as some of his supporters suggested.
The ICTY had said that this week it would receive further results from the autopsy from Dutch authorities but tribunal spokeswoman Alexandra Milenov told AFP Friday that they had not recieved anything yet.
