Flights delayed by Malmö fog

Thick fog enveloped the southern tip of Sweden on Monday, causing cancellations at Malmö's Sturup airport and a collision between two ferries in the harbour in Ystad.

By 7am, low visibility meant that flights were being redirected to airports at Ängelholm, Gothenburg and Copenhagen.

The problems continued throughout the day, with one flight from Stockholm Bromma delayed by three hours and another from Arlanda cancelled altogether.

A number of departures from Sturup were also cancelled, including three SAS flights to Stockholm. International departures were delayed by up to two hours.

Not far away, in the harbour in Ystad, a catamaran operated by Bornholmstrafiken collided with a ferry from Poland.

"There was thick fog, it was like milk," said harbourmaster Lars Börjesson to TT.

The damage to the catamaran was high above the waterline and it returned to traffic according to the timetable. The damage to the ferry was minimal.

Weather forecasters at SMHI said that the fog would linger for the rest of Monday.
