Murdered woman was Australian
A woman whose body parts were found in a lake south of Stockholm was Australian, it has been confirmed.
“We are aware of the case: it involves an Australian woman, and we are liaising with the local authorities,” Outi Alestalo, public affairs officer at the Australian Embassy in Stockholm, told The Local.
The embassy said it was not releasing further information about the case for the time being.
Prosecutor Cecilia Cassmer said that the man had “described what happened in questioning.”
He was formally charged with murder by a court in Stockholm on Friday, which ordered that he remain detained.
“He will now undergo examination by a forensic psychiatrist, and the prosecution will begin on 31st March,” Cassner told The Local, adding that the case would almost certainly then be adjourned for more evidence to be gathered.
Police say that the woman was killed in the couple’s apartment in the south of Stockholm in the small hours of Sunday morning. Her partner then chopped up the body, but left the parts in the apartment – where he remained with the pair’s two small children – until Tuesday, when he drove to Nykvarn in Sörmland and dumped them in the Yngern lake.
Expressen reports that the couple had rowed over the 38-year old woman’s desire to buy a house. The man had just been denied a mortgage because of a bad credit rating. He claims that she threatened to move abroad with their two children, and he then hit her over the head with a frying pan.
After two days he went to a Lidl store, where he bought an electric saw in the sale. He then chopped his partner into bits in the couple’s bathroom, Expressen reports.
Australian paper The Age reports that the victim came from Canberra, and had lived with her partner in Australia for several years, but had moved to Stockholm in January.
