Scania closes two Swedish plants
Swedish truckmaker Scania is closing two factories in rural Sweden and moving production to Södertälje, near Stockholm.
The closure of the units in Sibbhult, 100 km north-east of Malmö, and Falun, 200 km north-west of Stockholm, is intended to save the company 300 million kronor per year.
All the affected employees will be given the option of staying with the company.
Scania announced last autumn that it was introducing a major savings programme, and that the company’s production structure would be reviewed.
The review has now resulted in the decision to move production to Södertälje, where the company has the rest of its production and development. Around 1,200 employees in Sibbhult and Falun are affected by the announcement – 650 in Sibbhult and 550 in Falun.
The move to Södertälje should be completed within three years, and the annual saving from the restructuring will be 300 million kronor, Scania said in a press release.
The company also said that its spare parts division would be concentrated in Belgium.
