Officer gets shorter jail term

A senior officer in the Swedish military has had his sentence for assaulting his ex-wife reduced to three months in prison.
Major General Tony Stigsson, formerly one of the closest colleagues of Supreme Commander Håkan Syrén, was convicted last May on two counts of assault. He was cleared of more serious charges, including rape.
A court in Mariestad sentenced him to six months imprisonment, much lower than the five years demanded by prosecutors.
Stigsson had hoped to be cleared entirely by the Göta court of appeal in Gothenburg, but the court confirmed the earlier verdict, changing only the length of his sentence.
