'More money needed' to clear roads

A lack of money and a long, cold winter is forcing cuts in snow clearance on Swedish roads. Now representatives of bus, taxi and truck drivers are demanding that the government step in which more cash.

New guidelines laid out by the Swedish National Road Administration (Vägverket, SNRA), say that it is now acceptable for there to be 2-3 centimetres of snow on main roads before snowploughs leave their garages. On minor roads this is increased to 4-6 centimetres. The amount of salt spread on the roads has been halved, and the time taken to plough a road has been increased.

Organisations representing the taxi, bus and trucking industries have been joined by the Transport union in demanding that SNRA be given more money by central government to keep the roads clear.
