Policeman freed over killing

A policeman has been freed by a court in Örebro after he shot and killed a mentally unstable 22-year old man last spring in Lindesberg, about 30 kilometres north of Örebro.

The policeman had been charged with serious assault and manslaughter. Örebro district court accepted the policeman's own version of events over those of his colleagues and the victim's father.

The court said that it had not been demonstrated that the policeman's testimony of what happened was inaccurate. He said that the 22-year old had run at him with a knife in each hand, and he had fired a shot.

The court accepted that he had aimed at the man's thigh, but that it had hit his abdomen after ricocheting against a gate.
