"Promise wage equality" - SD youth leader
The leader of the Social Democrats’ youth movement has demanded that the party promises in this year’s election campaign to eradicate wage differences between the sexes by 2010.
Anna Sjödin, chairwoman of SSU, told Swedish Radio that labour minister Hans Karlsson and equality minister Jens Orback “need to wake up from their Sleeping Beauty slumber and actually give a promise to voters that they want to see a change.”
According to Sjödin, women earn around ten percent less than men.
“If you know what you want and have set yourself a deadline, there are many means to succeed. It’s time to put our foot on the gas,” she said added in a press release.
Sjödin also pointed out that two thirds of people on sick benefits are women. She also said that 80 percent of people in the boards of LO trade unions were men, and that there were only two women were in the chairs of major Swedish companies.
She also pointed to the amount of housework women do and increasing violence against women as problems that need to be tackled.
“To say that we have equality is to insult all the women who are raped, assaulted, shut out of power, work double and are belittled every day.”
She claimed that the Moderate Party’s ‘individualised world view keeps women chained to the stove and preserves oppression.”
