embassies.

"We are calling (Syria's) ambassador in Stockholm here tonight and I am trying to get in touch with my Syrian counterpart," Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds told Swedish news agency TT.

"I will voice our protest at how this could go so far. We expect the kind of protection that we are entitled to," she said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Christian Carlsson said Sweden was not, for now, asking its nationals to leave Syria, as Denmark and Norway did on Saturday.

"But nothing says that this can't change," he said.

Earlier, demonstrators angered over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed published in a Danish newspaper and republished in Norway and elsewhere, attacked the building in Damascus which houses the Danish, Swedish and Chilean embassies.

Some of them then went on to attack the nearby Norwegian embassy.
