Eriksson gets top Swedish honour

England football coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has been awarded a top honour by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf.

'Svennis', as he is known in Sweden, was handed the King's Medal on Tuesday for his "valuable contributions - nationally and internationally - to the sport of football." Eriksson's award, which was announced last summer, is the second highest honour the king can bestow on a Swedish commoner.

Eriksson was not the only Swedish sporting star to receive an award in the ceremony - Carolina Kluft and Stefan Holm were also at the palace to receive their medals.

Eriksson recently announced that he would leave his job with England after this summer's World Cup in Germany. His resignation followed a series of indiscretions in British tabloid newspapers.

Lars Heikensten, former governor of Sweden's central bank, the Riksbank, was presented with a medal for "distinguished services to Swedish monetary policy."

Bo Könberg, health minister under the last centre-right government was awarded for his "work in Swedish society."
