Pärson speeds ahead in Italy
Sweden's Anja Pärson won the women's World Cup super-G in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, on Friday, beating American duo Julia Mancuso and Lindsey Kildow.
Pärson, already successful this season in the slalom, giant slalom and downhill, prevailed in a time of 1min 16.78sec for her fifth World Cup win of the season and the 31st of her career.
The reigning world champion, who also notched up wins in all four disciplines last year, coped best with tricky conditions which forced the event to be delayed twice.
"For the second year running, I've won in four disciplines, it's incredible. I'm very proud because I'm managing to focus my energies on skiing well in each discipline," said the Swede.
"When they announced the first delay, I left for my hotel and grabbed another hour of sleep. On the second delay, I ate a plate of spaghetti.
"Visibilty didn't bother me. The snow was fine and the only problem was the ventilation of my goggles," Pärson said.
Race favourite Michaela Dorfmeister only came in 10th but still retained her lead in the super-G standings with Croatia's Janica Kostelic taking fourth to stay out in front in the race for the overall title.
Following her victory, Pärson decided not to compete in Saturday's downhill race, saying she wanted to rest ahead of Sunday's grand slalom.
"Anja doesn't desperately need the points from the downhill race," said her trainer Mikael Junglind to Dagens Nyheter.
