Disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his journalist wife owe more than $16,000 (€12,000) in back taxes on the Washington home they are trying to sell, city tax records showed Monday.

The three-bedroom, Federal-style house with swimming pool on Dumbarton Street Northwest in the exclusive Georgetown district is listed for sale at $4.7 million, down from $5.2 million when it went on the market in October.

Online tax records indicated that Strauss-Kahn and his wife Anne Sinclair, who edits the French edition of the Huffington Post and in whose name the house is registered, faced $16,160.07 in outstanding property taxes.

With late penalties and interest, their total bill goes up to $18,746.38, according to the District of Columbia's office of tax and revenue.

It was unclear why the taxes have yet to be paid. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer William Taylor was unavailable to comment, while a city hall spokesman told AFP that by law, local officials cannot discuss individual tax cases.

Strauss-Kahn was forced to resign from the International Monetary Fund in May last year after he was charged with sexually assaulting a New York hotel housekeeper. Charges were later dropped, but he remains dogged by scandal.
