But the last school year only 8,400 new teachers graduated. The biggest shortage is nursery school and youth recreation centre teachers.

In 2002/2003 - the academic year with the most new-starters so far - 15,600 new students started teaching training college. Since then the number of students admitted has decreased every year.

But this decline is not due to a lack of interest in teaching. Instead, the teaching colleges have cut down on the number of places. According to the Swedish National Agency for Education, the number of newly graduated teachers will increase over the next few years, but not by enough to meet the demand.
